Why is the "Add Assignment" button disabled on turnitin.com / turnitinuk.com for LMS classes?

When accessing a class on the Turnitin website (turnitin.com or turnitinuk.com) that was created via an Integration / Learning Management System (LMS), instructors can no longer manually add assignments directly through the web interface.

When attempting to click the Add Assignment button inside an LMS-linked class on the Turnitin website, you will encounter one of the following:

  • A no-entry icon: The button appears greyed out or displays a restricted cursor.

  • A pop-up warning: A message will appear directing you to manage your assignments directly within your LMS.

If a class was created via your LMS, you will need to create assignments directly within your LMS. Once created in your LMS, the assignment will automatically sync and connect with Turnitin as intended.

Why was this change made?

To ensure data consistency and prevent synchronization issues between Turnitin and your institution’s LMS (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L Brightspace), assignment creation must originate within the LMS. Creating assignments directly on turnitin.com for an integrated class can cause sync discrepancies and broken gradebook links.
