Can instructors check a paper for Similarity without submitting it to an assignment?

Yes. Instructors can check papers for plagiarism and generate an instant Similarity Report without creating a formal class or assignment by using the Quick Submit feature.

This is ideal for instructors who want to perform one-off spot-checks on student documents.

Step 1: Activate Quick Submit

Before using this tool, you must enable it in your account settings on the Turnitin website:

  1. Log in to your Turnitin account.

  2. Click the User Info tab at the top of your instructor homepage.

  3. Locate the Quick Submit setting and switch it to Yes.

  4. Click Submit to save your changes.

Step 2: Make a submission (Important repository settings)

Once activated, a "Quick Submit" tab will appear on your dashboard. When you upload a document, you will be prompted to choose your search settings:

  • Database selection: Choose which databases Turnitin should check the paper against.

  • Repository option (Crucial): If you are only testing or spot-checking a paper, ensure you select "No Repository" during the upload process. If you do not select "No Repository," the file will be saved to Turnitin's permanent database, which will cause it to flag as a 100% plagiarism match if it is submitted again later.

Important notice for LMS users

The Quick Submit feature is only available by logging directly into the Turnitin website. It cannot be accessed from within your Learning Management System (LMS) like Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle.

  • Check with your administrator: Direct website access may be restricted for some institutional LMS users.
  • Account locking: We recommend always accessing Turnitin via your LMS for routine grading. Logging directly into the Turnitin website can sometimes trigger security protocols that lock your institutional account. If your account becomes locked, you will need to contact your local Turnitin Administrator to manually unlock it.
