If instructors do not expire outdated classes at the end of a term, enrolled students from those previous classes will continue to be counted as active users toward your institution's total Turnitin student limit.
Best practice: Instructors should create new classes for each term and expire old classes to ensure inactive students do not consume account licenses.
How to expire a class
Turnitin does not have an immediate "Expire Now" button. However, instructors can expire a class within 24 hours by adjusting the class end date:
- Log in to Turnitin and navigate to your instructor homepage.
- Locate the class you want to expire and select the Edit icon (gear icon) next to the class name.
- Change the Class End Date to tomorrow's date.
- Save your changes.
By the following day, the end date will have passed, and the class will automatically move to an expired state, freeing up student licenses.
