If a student has submitted the incorrect paper to an assignment, the steps to resolve the issue differ depending on which version of the Turnitin Standard Assignment you are using. Please select your assignment version below for specific instructions:
Option 1: Allow the student to resubmit (before due date)
If the assignment's due date and time have not yet passed, the instructor can update the assignment settings to allow resubmissions. The student can then resubmit the correct paper, which will overwrite their previous incorrect submission.
Note on late submissions: Students cannot resubmit a paper after the assignment due date has passed. This is intended behavior; late submissions are only permitted for a student's first submission, not for resubmissions.
Option 2: Instructor removes the paper (after due date)
If the due date has already passed, the instructor must intervene. The instructor can remove the incorrect paper from the assignment inbox and either:
- Submit the correct paper on behalf of the student.
- Allow the student to submit the paper themselves (only if late submissions are enabled for the assignment).
Option 1: The student resubmits (before due date)
If the assignment's due date and time have not yet passed, the instructor can update the assignment settings to allow resubmissions. The student can then resubmit the correct paper, which will overwrite their previous incorrect submission.
Note on late submissions: Students cannot resubmit a paper after the assignment due date has passed. This is intended behavior; late submissions are only permitted for a student's first submission, not for resubmissions.
Option 2: Instructor grants an extension (after due date)
If the due date has already passed, instructors can grant an extension on an individual basis. This extends the due date specifically for the affected student, allowing either the student or the instructor to upload the correct paper.
Read our guide for further information on how to grant individual extensions.
