It is best practice to create a new Turnitin class for the start of a new semester or academic year and avoid reusing the same Turnitin class with a new student cohort. Reusing Turnitin classes will continue to include previous students who may have already completed the class or left the institution, resulting in inactive students being counted against your institution's active student license limit.
We recommend creating a new Turnitin class in preparation for a new semester or year and expiring inactive classes. Alternatively, you can follow the Turnitin class copy recommendations available as a way to easily copy classes to be reused with a new student cohort.
When a class is copied, the instructor is prompted to enter a new class name, enrollment key, and the start date for the first assignment in the class. The remaining assignment and discussion dates for the class will automatically be set based on the start date you set for this assignment.
To copy a class:
- Click on the class copy icon to the right of the class name.
- On the next screen, edit the following information:
- Class name
- Enrollment key
- Select the start date and time for the first assignment for the class.
- Click Save to copy the class, or Cancel to abort the process.
You will then be directed to the copied class' page, where you can review the dates for the assignments in the copied class. Edit any assignment dates by clicking on the More actions link to the right of the assignment, and then select Edit settings from the dropdown menu.
Note: You can only copy primary classes. You are unable to copy a master class.
