How do I fix the error '"lis_person_contact_email_primary" is not a valid email address'?

When launching a Turnitin LTI 1.1 assignment from your Learning Management System (LMS), you may encounter the following error message:

Error message: "lis_person_contact_email_primary" is not a valid email address

Cause

The Turnitin LTI 1.1 integration requires a valid email address to be passed from your LMS user profile to create or authenticate your Turnitin session. This error occurs when the LMS fails to transmit a valid primary email address.

Important note for instructors: This error frequently occurs when instructors attempt to preview an assignment using the LMS Student View feature. The test student profile generated by LMS Student View does not pass a valid email address or user role to Turnitin, causing the submission portal preview to fail.

How to resolve

Work through the following steps to resolve the error:

  1. Avoid LMS Student View: If you are an instructor testing the assignment, switch back to your standard instructor view. Student View cannot be used to preview Turnitin LTI assignments.
  2. Verify profile email: Check your profile settings within your LMS (such as Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, or Brightspace) to ensure that a valid primary email address is listed.
  3. Check anonymity settings: Ensure your LMS user account or profile is not set to "Anonymous" or "Private," as these privacy restrictions can block the LMS from transmitting your email address to Turnitin.

If your profile email is correct and you are not using Student View, please contact your institution's LMS administrator to confirm that your institution's LTI privacy settings permit email address sharing with external tools.
