When you adjust search filters or exclusion options within an individual Turnitin Similarity Report, any changes to the Similarity score will not be transmitted back to Canvas SpeedGrader.
Expected behavior: Turnitin does not automatically sync individual, report-level filter changes with Canvas SpeedGrader. SpeedGrader will always display the original Similarity score generated upon submission based on your assignment-level settings.
How Similarity score syncing works
To ensure consistency across grading tools, understand how Turnitin passes scores to Canvas:
- Initial submission score: Canvas SpeedGrader displays the initial score generated using the default search targets and exclusion rules configured in the assignment setup.
- Individual report filters: Adjusting exclusions (such as bibliography, quotes, or small matches) inside Turnitin Feedback Studio recalculates the score for that specific view only. It does not overwrite the baseline score stored in Canvas.
Best practices for instructors
To ensure that the Similarity scores shown in Canvas SpeedGrader match your intended exclusion criteria:
- Configure all necessary exclusion filters (such as excluding bibliographies or quoted material) directly in the assignment settings during creation.
- Finalize these settings before students begin uploading their submissions.
Setting your preferences at the assignment level ensures that Turnitin applies your rules automatically during initial processing, passing the intended Similarity score to Canvas SpeedGrader.
