When using Turnitin via the Canvas LTI 1.1 integration, submission permissions depend on whether a paper has already been submitted:
- Instructors: Can resubmit on behalf of a student, but cannot make an initial (first) submission on their behalf.
- Canvas administrators: Can make an initial submission on behalf of a student by using Canvas's Act as User (masquerading) feature.
Steps for Canvas administrators to submit for a student
Stage 1: Act as the student in Canvas
- Log in to Canvas with an account that has Administrator permissions.
- From the left-hand navigation menu, select People.
- Search for and click on the Username of the student you need to submit for.
- Click User Account Details.
- Click Act as User, then click Proceed to confirm.
Confirmation check: Canvas will display a purple border around your screen view to confirm you are actively acting as the selected student.
Stage 2: Submit the Turnitin assignment
- While acting as the student, navigate to the relevant Canvas course page.
- Locate and click on the Turnitin assignment.
- Upload the file on the student's behalf and click Confirm to complete the submission.
