If you are unable to see the AI writing detection report or indicator for a submission, it is usually due to specific file requirements, account settings, or your platform integration type.
This guide outlines the most common reasons why the report might not be visible. Please select each heading below for more information.
AI writing detection is a feature that is only available to institutions that license Turnitin Originality and access is subject to certain requirements:
- Licensing Requirements: AI writing detection is only visible and active for accounts with an active Turnitin Originality license.
- Sub-Account Access: If your main institution does not license Turnitin Originality, all associated sub-accounts will not have access to the AI writing detection feature.
Can't access AI writing detection? > If you are unsure about your institution's current license status, or if you believe your institution licenses Turnitin Originality but you still cannot access AI writing detection, please contact your institution’s Turnitin administrator for assistance.
For the system to successfully generate an AI writing report, English-language submissions must meet the following criteria:
- Word Count: Must contain between 300 and 30,000 words of long-form prose text.
- File Size: Must be less than 100 MB.
- File Type: Accepted formats include .docx, .pdf, .txt, and .rtf.
- Language: Files must be written in English
- Submission Date: AI detection is only available for papers submitted after the feature was officially released.
đź’ˇ Tip: If you need an AI report for an older, historical paper, simply resubmit the paper to generate the report.
Do you have a submission in another language? Turnitin’s AI writing detection capabilities are able to detect likely AI-generated content for documents submitted in long-form English, long-form Spanish and long-form Japanese.
If a submission is in an unsupported language, the AI writing detector will not process it.
- What you will see: The indicator will display an empty or error state.
- In-app guidance: On-screen prompts will appear to remind you that this feature only works for supported languages.
- Reports: No detection report will be generated for content written in an unsupported language.
⚠️ Note: Our AI paraphrasing and bypassing detection capabilities are only available for English submissions.
Microsoft Teams
AI writing detection is exclusively available through the Microsoft Teams integration with Turnitin Feedback Studio.
⚠️ Note: This feature is not currently supported in the Microsoft Teams Assignment Similarity integration, as it lacks the required separate teacher viewer.
Google Classrooms
For AI writing detection, students must submit through the Turnitin attachment, so please encourage your students to use this method. However, if an instructor using the Similarity integration has a concern that a report may have been written with an AI writing tool, they can request that their administrator use the submission search tool to view a full report.Â
- Visibility: AI writing detection reports are not visible to students.
- Sharing Reports: Instructors who wish to share the findings can manually download the report using the Download button located in the top-right corner of the viewer and share the saved file directly with the student.
