Why am I unable to submit my paper to Turnitin?

If you are having trouble uploading your paper, the issue is usually caused by incorrect file formatting, exceeding size/word limits, or specific assignment restrictions.

Please follow the checklist below to identify and fix the issue.

Step 1: Verify your file requirements

If your assignment is set to only accept files that can generate a Similarity Report, your document must meet the following technical rules:

  • Supported file types: Your file must be in a supported format (e.g., .docx, .pdf, .txt, .rtf).

  • Size & length limits: The file must be under 100 MB and fewer than 800 pages.

  • Minimum word count: The document must contain at least 20 words of extractable prose text.

  • No images or scanned text: The text in your document must be selectable and copyable. Scanned documents, image-based PDFs, forms, or portfolios will be automatically rejected.

  • No media or special effects: Remove any embedded animations or special effects from PowerPoint files.

  • Excel files: Ensure there are no hidden sheets and that all content fits within the designated printable area.

For a complete list of accepted formats, see our File requirements for submissions guide. You can also view more deep-dive tips in our File troubleshooting guide.

Step 2: Check the assignment settings

Your instructor's specific assignment configurations might be blocking your upload attempt:

  • Late submissions: If the due date has passed, you can only submit if your instructor explicitly enabled late submissions. This option only applies to your very first submission. Late resubmissions to overwrite a file are never allowed, even if the assignment accepts late work.

  • Resubmissions: You cannot overwrite an existing submission if the due date has already passed. If it is before the due date and you still cannot resubmit, your instructor may have disabled resubmissions entirely.

  • Single file restriction: You can only upload one single document per assignment. Multiple files or compressed ZIP folders are not allowed.

Step 3: Try alternative submission methods

If your file is correct but the standard upload button continues to fail, try these alternative workarounds based on your assignment type:

  • Use text input (Classic standard assignments only): If you are submitting to a Classic Standard Assignment, you can bypass file uploading entirely. Switch your submission method from "File Upload" to Text input, then copy and paste your paper's text directly into the provided text box. (Unsure which version you are using? Check our Identifying your assignment version guide).

Next steps: When to contact your instructor

If your file perfectly matches all technical requirements but you are still blocked by a due date, a resubmission restriction, or a deadline error, please contact your instructor directly.

Turnitin Technical Support cannot alter assignment rules or due dates. Your instructor or institutional administrator will need to:

  • Delete your previous submission attempt to clear the slot,

  • Adjust the assignment settings to allow your file, or

  • Manually upload the paper on your behalf.
