When Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is enabled for your Turnitin account, logging in requires entering a one-time passcode sent directly to your registered email address. If you are not receiving your passcode email, follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve the issue.
How to locate your missing passcode email
Work through these steps if the passcode email does not arrive in your primary inbox within 1–2 minutes:
- Check spam, junk, and clutter folders:
Automated verification emails are frequently filtered into spam or promotional folders by institutional email systems. Check these folders for an email from Turnitin. - Verify your registered email address:
Ensure you are checking the exact institutional email address associated with your Turnitin profile. - Avoid shared or alias inboxes:
Passcode emails are sent strictly to active, individual user inboxes. Generic, shared, or unmonitored group email addresses will block passcode delivery and lead to account lockouts. - Request a new passcode:
Return to the login screen at home.turnitin.com and select the option to resend the passcode. Ensure you enter the most recently received code, as requesting a new code invalidates any previous codes.
Locked out of your account? If you cannot access your registered email inbox to retrieve the passcode, contact your Turnitin account administrator. They may be able to temporarily disable the MFA requirement for your role to restore your access.
Institutional email configuration & allowlisting
If multiple users across your institution report missing MFA passcodes, your campus mail gateway or security filter may be blocking or delaying automated emails from Turnitin.
Recommended technical actions
- Allowlist the Turnitin domain:
Ensure your network and email security filters allowlist all emails originating from the @turnitin.com domain. - Verify user inbox statuses:
Confirm that impacted user accounts are backed by active, live email inboxes capable of receiving external messages. Emergency MFA toggle:
Account administrators with Admin Management permissions can temporarily toggle MFA off for specific roles (e.g., Instructors or Students) to immediately restore user access.
To access this setting:- Log in to your admin account at home.turnitin.com.
- Open the Users tab in the left-hand panel.
- Select the Multi-factor authentication tab across the top.
Changes take effect instantly.
Note for Single Sign-On (SSO): Institutions authenticating via Single Sign-On (such as Shibboleth, Google, Clever, or ClassLink) bypass Turnitin email MFA entirely, as authentication is handled through your institution's identity provider.
