When trying to open or submit to a Turnitin assignment from your Learning Management System (LMS), you may encounter the following error message:
Error message: You are not authorized to access this resource
Cause
This error occurs when you are enrolled in your LMS course, but your user account has not been successfully added to the corresponding Turnitin class roster. This usually happens if your LMS profile is assigned an unsupported or custom role that fails to pass valid student permissions to Turnitin.
Resolution

If you receive this error message, you cannot resolve it on your own:
- Contact your course instructor or local IT Helpdesk.
- Inform them that you are receiving the error message "You are not authorized to access this resource" when trying to open the Turnitin assignment.
- Ask them to verify your course enrollment and confirm that your account is assigned the standard Student role in the LMS.
If a student reports this error, check their LMS course enrollment settings:
- Open your LMS course roster and locate the affected user.
- Verify that the user's assigned role is set to a standard student role.
- If using a custom role (such as Auditor, Guest, or Observer), change the role to Student so the LMS can pass valid permissions to Turnitin.
- If using a Moodle or LTI integration, refresh or re-sync the assignment roster to add the student to the Turnitin class.
Supported user roles: Turnitin only supports the standard Teacher, Teaching Assistant (TA), and Student roles. Custom, administrative, or preview roles created by your institution will fail to pass authorization to Turnitin.
