Revision Assistant: Signal Check Messages

When submitting a Signal Check in Revision Assistant, students may occasionally receive a pop-up message in a gray box rather than specific inline feedback.

This is not a system error. It indicates that Revision Assistant is unable to provide accurate feedback for the current text and requires the student to make adjustments to their essay before requesting another check.

Revision Assistant cannot evaluate a draft if any of the following conditions are met:

  • The essay is too short: Revision Assistant requires a sufficient amount of text to generate meaningful feedback. Students should aim to write at least one full paragraph (a few complete sentences) before requesting a Signal Check.
  • The essay is off-topic: Feedback relies on the relevance of the submission to the assigned prompt. If the essay strays from the topic, Revision Assistant halts feedback to avoid providing inaccurate suggestions and displays guidance on reviewing narrative structure or prompt alignment.
  • The essay closely matches the assignment text: If a draft relies too heavily on quoted source material or reuses large portions of the assignment prompt, Revision Assistant will prompt the student to rephrase the content in their own words.

If you receive a Signal Check message, please review the guidance inside the gray pop-up box, try expanding your writing, and ensure your draft addresses the assigned prompt directly.
