Troubleshooting audio and video feedback recording issues

Most audio and video recording issues in Turnitin can be resolved by checking your web browser permissions or your device's hardware settings.

If you are having trouble recording feedback, please follow the troubleshooting steps below.

Important compatibility notes:
  • Video feedback is only available in the New Standard Assignment. If you are using the Classic Standard Assignment, please disregard the video/camera troubleshooting steps.

  • External audio devices (such as USB microphones, external headsets, or Bluetooth devices) are not supported with the Classic Standard Assignment. If you are using the Classic view, you must use your computer's built-in microphone. External audio hardware is only fully supported within the New Standard Assignment.

1. Check your browser permissions

Turnitin relies entirely on your internet browser to access your camera and microphone. If your browser is blocking these tools, the recording will not work.

Click the link for your specific browser below to view instructions on how to allow camera and microphone access:

đź’ˇ Tip: After updating your browser permissions, refresh the Turnitin page before attempting to record again. If your device has multiple microphones or cameras, ensure the correct input device is selected within your browser's settings.

2. Test your hardware

Ensure your recording equipment is functioning properly on your operating system.

  • Make sure your microphone or camera is securely plugged in (if using an external device), turned on, and that the volume is turned up.

  • Run a quick test: Try recording your voice or video using a built-in application on your computer, such as Windows Voice Recorder/Camera or Mac's QuickTime Player.

⚠️ Note: If your recording device does not work in your computer's native applications, the issue is likely with the hardware itself or your system settings. Please contact your local IT Support team for further assistance.

3. Clear your browser cache

If your microphone and camera work perfectly in other programs but fail to record specifically in Turnitin, your browser may be relying on outdated data.

  1. Clear your browser's cookies and cache.

  2. Completely restart your browser.

  3. Open the assignment and try recording your feedback again.

Important: After you finish recording and click save, Turnitin needs a moment to process and upload the file. You must wait for the save confirmation banner to appear before closing the Similarity Report. Closing the window or tab before this confirmation appears may result in your recording being lost.
